  • Chaucer and The Canterbury Tales

Thanks to my wonderful daughter, I have been introduced to British Literature.  I am taking a class at the community college, in which we have been studying Chaucer and now Shakespeare.  I have so enjoyed these classes.  It has been so much fun, and so enlightening.

I finished a book by P C Doherty "A Tournament of Murders, The Franklin's Tale of Mystery and Murder As He Goes on Pilgrimage from London to Canterbury."  It is one of those books that I could hardly put down.  It talks about squires and knights, murder, loyalty, good, evil, on and on - so rich.  I learned today that he writes under several different names and has published many books so I will definitely be reading more by this author.

Yesterday, my 4th grade granddaughter brought home a library book about Elizabeth I, daughter of Anne Bolelyn.  My DD and I have been discussing the kings, queens, and knights - we didn't realize she was listening to us.  What a wonderful surprise when I learned of her interest.  We have watched the first two segments of The Six Wives of Henry VIII.  A picture of Henry VIII and all six of his wives was in the library book, and we looked at it together.  Just doesn't get any better than that.

My DD loves, loves, loves books and so do I; now it looks like my DGD (darling granddaughter) will follow. I sure hope so.

    Some good quotes:

    • Life is not about waiting for the storms to pass...it's about learning to dance in the rain.~Vivian Greene

    • Sometimes our candle goes out, but is blown into flame by an encounter with another human being.~Albert Schweitzer

    • A man wrapped up in himself makes a very small bundle.~Benjamin Franklin

    • We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.~Winston Churchill

    • What lies behind us, and what lies before us, are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.~Ralph Waldo Emerson

    • We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.~Aristotle

  • When God Rebuked Moses for Praying

The following is an excerpt from "Prayer that Moves Mountains" by Gordon Lindsay

"And the Lord said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? Speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward. But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea." Ex 14:15-16

The reason many prayers are answered so slowly is because those who pray them do not do their part. Moses had prayed. Now the time had come for action.

Elisha took the mantle of Elijah and spoke to the Jordan saying, Where is the Lord God of Elijah?" and the water parted.

Elijah spoke and there was no rain for three years. Jesus spoke and the water was turned into wine. He spoke again and the leper was healed. At His command, demons were forced to come out. At His whisper the blind saw and the deaf heard. He spoke words of judgment to the fig tree and it dried up from the roots. The disciples watched Jesus as He worked and they too learned the secret of command. They too began to do the works He did. Jesus gave them the use of His name, and they too spoke the word and miracles took place.

At the Beautiful Gate, Peter said to the lame man, "Silver and gold have I none, but such as I have give I thee: in the Name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk." And the man who had been carried from his mother's womb leaped and walked.

Is it dangerous for men to have such power? Only if they use it for selfish purposes. Only if they fail to be led by the Spirit. Such, of course, is possible and care must be duly exercised. Moses lifted his rod and smote the rock twice, commanding water to come out (Num. 20:10-11) The watercame, but the act was done in anger rather than in the Spirit of God. Therefore, Moses was not permitted to lead the children of Israel into the Promised Land (Num 20:l2).  End.

    ______________________

As Christians, we have to be very careful with the Word of God. We must exercise love and wisdom at all times. The same Bible tells us to have love is greater than any other gift. Let everything else fail, but love will remain. We see so many false teachers in our world today who are using the Gospel to exploit people, to deceive and all they are interested in is their money. I am afraid that is what most of the TV hype is all about. It is much better to stay with a local church and be active in that church with an outreach to help people in the local community and round about. Being doers is so much more important than just hearing and doing nothing. There are so many cult religions today that attract people with a great show of emotion and outward demonstration. We must beware of all of these. However, in the midst of all the turmoil, when we are still, we can hear that voice of God speaking to us through His Word, through things around us, and we can know that we have the power and authority inside of us to rise to the occasion, and be victorious in our lives, not defeated. To God be all the glory!

  • George Eliot Quote

Today I saw a quote on a professor's desk which said, "It is never too late to be what you may have been."

This really touched my heart, and was a word of encouragement and inspiration for me today -  a God thing.

I commented to the professor about the quote, and she shared an interesting story with me.  She said that several years ago, a young man just out of high school had received a beautiful book on life, what to do after school, from his mother; and that his mother had included this very nice bookmark with the above quote. She said the  young man was very serious, and after they had finished going over college plans, he left. After he left, she noticed that he had left the bookmarker behind. She did not know how to get in touch with him, and she felt he would return for the marker so she left it out on her desk. He never returned so she just left it out on her desk for all the enjoy. That little bookmarker has inspired so many.

  • Famous Quotes

"Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's little nut that held its ground.... Never give in! Never give in! Never, never, never, never in anything great or small, large or petty - never give in except to convictions of honor and good sense" Winston S. Churchill

When Fanny Crosby was six weeks old, a dose of the wrong medicine in her eyes took her sight. However, she did not spend her life brooding in the darkness. When she was only eight, she wrote the verse:

Oh, what a happy soul am I

    Althought I cannot see

I am resolved that in the world

    Contented I will be

Her patience and her hope in tribulation made her blindness a blessing. God blessed her and made her a blessing to others. She wrote "Blessed Assurance" which has comforted so many.

  • Eagles

    • EAGLES, & OTHER FOULS

The EAGLE Christian sees behind the storm the surging, moving power of the Holy Spirit of GOD and rises on WINGS OF FAITH to rest in God's carrying power, far from harm and destruction.

He doesn't have to pump up his faith and talk himself into happy moods of courage. He abides, restfully trusting the current of God's Love- moving not be striving, but by the soaring currents of God. The LORD Himself bears him up. Others, seeing try to huff and puff to his heights and cannot understand his resful, easy soaring-thinking it is the EAGLE rather than the wings of God's Love.

The Lord wants families who encourage and promote the formation of EAGLES:

      OVERLY PROTECTIVE FAMILIES PRODUCE CHICKENS-

chickens Who never grow up, never fly & are afraid of life.

      CRITICAL, ABUSIVE FAMILIES CREATE VULTURES-

Vultures Who bully & abuse other kids; then grow up & criticize and abuse their mates & their children.

SOFT, PAMPERED & SENTIMENTAL FAMILIES PRODUCE PIGEONS-

pigeons 2 Who strut & coo & overcomfort; who run for shelter in the storms, never becoming responsible adults; usually blaming others for their every failure.

AMBITIOUS, WORLDLY FAMILIES BRING FORTH PEACOCKS-

peacock Who are full of pride, flashy dress & worldly values.

FLIPPANT FAMILIES TO WHOM LIFE IS A SUCCESSION OF SOCIAL ACTIVITIES PRODUCE SPARROWS-

sparrow Who flit here & there, chattering meainglessly; who grow up with no depth in life, establishing only surface relationships.

OVERLY BUSY, WORK-ORIENTED FAMILIES SEND OUT WOODPECKERS-

woodpeckers Who go about noisily rushing through life as workaholics, mistaking activities for accomplishments; frantically searching for new crusades to peck away at in self-importance.

BUT AN EAGLE FAMILY IS SOMETHING DIFFERENT!

eagle flies  It's nest is set high upon the rocks of faith, or in the topmost branches of the tree of faith. It is expose to wind, weather & sun. The Christian EAGLE Family is perched on the strength of God's WORD, standing against the winds of humanism and the "ways that seem right to the world."

When a Child is in an EAGLE home falls & skins his knees, his parents brush him off, love him up, doctor the wound, and say, "Back at it, kid; life's like that!"

EAGLE parents demand work, and balance it with play!

When a Momma EAGLE trains her children to fly, it's an awesome process.

      eagle

She flutters over her nest, demonstrating by sight how to fly. Then comes a day when she gathers an EAGLET onto her back and, spreading her wings, flies high...she suddenly swoops out from under the EAGLET. Down and down the baby EAGLET falls, and perhaps begins to discover what his wings are for; then the mother swoops under him and catches him again on her back. Many times the process is repeated. IF the EAGLET is slow to learn, or is cowardly, she returns him to the nest and tries again in a few days; then perhaps again. IF he will not learn, she begins to tear the nest apart until there is nothing left for the EAGLET to cling to!

      eaglets

EAGLE Christians say, "IF you fall off the horse, get right back up and ride again, no matter how much it hurts or how much you are afraid." Sure, sometimes the child is afraid, and sometimes the parent is afraid, BUT courageous soldiers know that the difference between cowards and gold medal winners is not the absence of fear, but how each responds to the fear! Cowards fall helplessly to defeat; EAGLE CHRISTIAN put out their wings and FLY
